Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 vs Dimensity 9000: Now that MediaTek and Qualcomm have unveiled their flagship chipsets for 2022, we have a fair idea of what to expect from these chips. Though Qualcomm has ruled chiefly the market for quite some time, this year could be different because MediaTek also claims its high-end chipsets are more potent than its rivals'. 


The Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 and MediaTek's Dimensity 9000 use the same mobile process technology, but there are some differences between them. While both of these chipsets were developed using a 4nm fabrication process, the Dimensity 9000 uses a more advanced process called 4nm FinFET by TSMC (Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company), which is considered to be far superior to Samsung Foundry's 4nm process used for the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1.


Both chipsets beat the previous benchmark, scoring over a million points while also setting a new standard in the chipset world. In this post, we've compared both Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 and MediaTek's latest release: the Dimensity 9000 5G Check out which one is right for you.

Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 vs Dimensity 9000: Features & Comparison


CPU Comparison 


In the CPU department, both the processors are pretty similar. Both these processors use ARM's latest CPU cores based on Armv9 architecture. Both the processors are eight-core processors based on a 4nm process node with the new ARM Cortex-X2 as their prime core. Both processors share the same clusters of CPU cores in the identical arrangement of (1+3+4). 


It comprises one Cortex ARM-X2 core, three Cortex-A710 cores, and four Cortex-A510 cores. The only difference is that the clock speed at the cores is clocked in both the SoCs. In Dimensity 9000, the clock speed of cores in the pattern (1,3 & 4) is 3.05Ghz, 2.85Ghz, and 1.8GHz, respectively, whereas in Snapdragon 8 Gen 1,,, the values are 3Ghz, 2.5Ghz, and 1.8Ghz respectively. MediaTek Dimensity has an edge here due to its higher clock speed. 


The chipsets Snapdragon 8 gen 1 & Dimensity 9000 promise a boost of 20% & 35% respectively in their CPU processing power from their previous flagship chipsets. The Sna[dragon 8 Gen 1 consists of 6MB of L3 cache memory, whereas in Dimensity 9000, we got 8MB of L3 cache memory. It means in the department of CPU performance, Dimensity 9000 will lead.


GPU Comparison: Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 vs Dimensity 9000


The MediaTek Dimensity 9000 boasts "Mali-G710 MC10" for taking care of graphics-related tasks. It is a ten core GPU. MediaTek claims that this new GPU will give a performance jump of 35% and is 60% more efficient than the last-gen Snapdragon 888 chipset. 


Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 features a next-generation custom made Adreno GPU, giving it premium graphics to power the most ambitious mobile games. The added support for tessellation and geometry shaders enables more detailed and realistic visuals. In addition, the Snapdragon 8 series will also feature a Frame Motion Engine that supports advanced visualization and cinematic rendering with 10-bit HDR quality graphics in both bright and dim environments. At the same time, the upgrade to Vulkan API unlocks even more possibilities in performance for mobile gamers.


ISP (Image Signal Processing) Conparison: Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 vs Dimensity 9000


The 18-Bit HDR ISP in Dimensity 9000 can support a 200MP single, 64MP + 36MP Dual rear camera and support 8K resolution at 24FPS video recording and 4K HDR video recording 120FPS. Mediatek Dimensity 9000 has the world's first ISP that can capture 320MP still images. This new ISP also gives Dimensity 9000 power to simultaneously record 4K HDR videos from all three cameras.


On the other hand, the 18-Bit HDR ISP of Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 can capture 3.2 Gigapixels/second compared to the capturing capacity of Dimensity's 9 Gigapixels/second. ISP in Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 can support up to a 200MP single, 64MP + 36MP Dual, 36MP + 36MP + 36MP rear camera and can support 8K HDR resolution at 30FPS video recording and 4K HDR video recording at 120FPS.

In addition to this, the new triple ISP of Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 supports multi-frame noise reduction and improved low-light photography.


AI & Machine Learning 


Dimensity carries a 5th generation 6-core APU (AI Processing Unit) for handling AI-related tasks, which is four times more efficient and powerful than its predecessors. Compared with Snapdragon 888, MediaTek Claims that this new APU is almost 90% faster. 


The 7th generation Hexagon AI processing unit in Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 can deliver a value of 27 TOPS (Trillion Operation Per Second), which is four times more powerful and 1.7 times more power-efficient than last year's Snapdragon 888.


Connectivity


For Connectivity purposes, both the chipsets consist of an integrated 5G modem. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 supports speeds of up to 10Gb/s on sub-6GHz 5G networks, helped by Carrier Aggregation (CA), and can reach peak download speeds through mmWave 5G by using Wi-Fi 6E. The new Snapdragon chipset supports Wi-Fi 6, Wi-Fi 6E, 4*4 MIMO, Bluetooth 5.2, and USB 3.1/3.2 Type-C.

On another note, the integrated modem of the Dimensity 9000 chipset supports sub-6GHz bands, but none of the mmWave 5G bands are supported. Dimensity 9000 can max out at 7.5Gb/s on the Sub-6Ghz spectrum. The chipset supports Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.3, NFC, USB 3.2 Type-C, and all other types of connectivity features also.

So, this is a detailed comparison between Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 and Dimensity 9000. There is no doubt that MediaTek launched a powerful flagship SoC that can deliver some heavy blows in the arena of flagship SoCs against snapdragon 8 Gen 1. In the CPU area, we can say that the MediaTek Dimensity 9000 has the edge over the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1. However, in the GPU department, Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 wins.
