Qualcomm Snapdragon 780G SoC announced: Features & Specs

 

Here we are again looking at another 5G processor offered by Qualcomm and this time we're talking about the new 5G SoC offered by Qualcomm in 7-series of the processor. Qualcomm is launching back-to-back 5G processors in every price bracket giving different OEM options to choose from. We're looking third 5G enabled SoC from Qualcomm on an average gap of two-three months. 

Qualcomm Snapdragon  780G is the latest addition in the Snapdragon's 7-series of processors. It's going to be a successor to snapdragon 765G and sits between the 765G and the flagship 8-series processor like Snapdragon 865, with some qualities borrowed from its higher-end sibling Snapdragon 888. Also, it's going to be the first 7-series SoC to be built on a 5nm process and you can say that it's more like a lite version of the Snapdragon 888 processor. 

Smartphones equipped with the Snapdragon 780G will be available in the market in the second quarter of 2021.

Qualcomm Snapdragon 780G specifications and features: 

It's obviously an octa-core CPU that is built on Samsung's 5nm node process. Here Qualcomm uses Kryo 670 CPU which is claimed to deliver up to a 40% increase in performance from its predecessor. All eight cores are in fact Kryo 670- 1×Kryo (A78) core as prime core clocked at 2.4GHz,  3×Kryo cores as Big CPU clocked at 2.2GHz, and 6×Kryo cores as a Small CPU clocked at 1.8GHz.

GPU duties are executed by the Adreno 642 which might sit between the SD855 and SD865 in terms of performance. New Adreno 642 GPU promises up to 50% faster graphics than its predecessor, Snapdragon 765G. The all-new updated display drivers can support Full HD+ display up to 144Hz refresh rate.

The Snapdragon 780G features a new Snapdragon X53 5G Modem-RF System which can deliver up to 3.3Gbps of download speed on the Sub-6Ghz spectrum, sadly I don't know why but it misses out mmWave frequency. It comes with the Fast Connect 6900  system, which we last saw in Snapdragon 888 which brings out support for Wi-Fi 6 & Wi-Fi 6E. It'll also feature 2nd generation  Qualcomm Sensing Hub, alongside a dedicated low-power AI processor for a much rich and enhanced audio experience. Qualcomm Snapdragon Elite Gaming technology is introduced for all gamers out there, which claimed to deliver a desktop-level smooth gaming experience with all AAA title games. 

It has also a triple spectra 570 ISP, a feature borrowed from SD888 which allows taking three photos or videos taken at the same time, which is the first time for a 7-series Snapdragon processor. This ISP allows to take 10-Bit color photos and videos and record in HDR10, HDR10+, and HLG as well. It's capable of handling a triple rear camera setup up to 25MP sensor or up to 84MP sensor in case of a single camera. The new ISP allows this chipset to capture a photo up to a resolution of 192-megapixel and 4K HDR as well. 

The new Hexagon 770 DSP processor with Qualcomm's 6th generation AI engine can perform 12 TOPS (trillion operations per second) which is twice the operations performed by Snapdragon 765G.

The new Snapdragon 780G cam support LPDDR4 memory up to 16GB clocked at 2.1GHz and the SoC also offers USB 3.1 for data storage and Quick Charge 4 support to charge the battery as well.
