Qualcomm snapdragon 870 SoC launched all you need to know

 

On 19th Jan'21 American Chipset maker, Qualcomm launched their latest flagship 5G processor in the 800 series. A successor to the snapdragon 865 chipsets, "Snapdragon 870 5G". Within the last two months or so Qualcomm is launching back-to-back 5G SoCs in almost every budget segment and trying to target every possible price range. After the launch of Snapdragon 888 & a budget 5G processor Snapdragon 480, this Snapdragon 8705G is their third offering in the past two months.

Qualcomm snapdragon 870 SoC: Features

The Snapdragon 870 5G sits between the last year's flagship processor SD 865 series and recently launched new flagship SoC which is Snapdragon 888.

If we talk about the internals it's still an 8 core processor which is built on TSMC's 7nm process node. It's pretty much identical to the last year's snapdragon 865+ chipset in almost every aspect. You can also call it an overclocked version of snapdragon 865+ because the cluster of cores used in this the exact same which we saw in the SD 865+ with a lone difference is in the clock speed of the prime core between the two of them. Both the SoCs shares the exact same cluster of core in the identical arrangement of cores. One Cortex-A77 core as a prime one, three Cortex-A77 as performance cores, and four Cortex-A55 as efficiency cores. In snapdragon 870 5G the prime core is clocked at 3.2 gigahertz, whereas the same core in SD 685+ is clocked at 3.1 gigahertz and the rest of the cores are clocked at the same frequency in both the processors which is- three Cortex-A77 performance cores at 2.42 gigahertz and four Cortex-A55 cores at 1.8 gigahertz.

Thus making snapdragon 870 5G approx. 10% faster than SD 865 and around 3% faster than SD 865 plus. Again the GPU employed in snapdragon 870 5G is the same which we previously saw in SD 865 plus 'Adreno 650' also clocked at the same speed at 670Mhz. 

It will also boast an external X55 5G/LTE modem which can deliver good 5G speeds on both the mmWave and Sub-6GHz spectrum and can reach up to a peak download speed of 7.5Gbps and download speed of 3Gbps. Other connectivity features include Snapdragon Fast Connect 6800 system. It will support Wi-Fi 6 up to 1.77Gbps approximately, Bluetooth 5.2 with the support of aptX voice and adaptive. Will also support Quick charge 4 plus.

If we talk about display it can run a 1440p (2K resolution panel) panel up to 144Hz or 4K resolution at 60Hz without breaking a sweat. The chipset is also embedded with a 5th generation AI engine 'Hexagon 698' DSP with hexagon tensor accelerator, boasting up to 15 TOPS (Trillion operations per second).

As per the camera concern, it is equipped with "Spectra 480' ISP with support for a single rear camera sensor of up to 200MP, can capture 4K videos at 120FPS, and is also capable of capturing 8K videos at 30FPS, high dynamic range videos with the support of HDR 10+, Dolby Vision and HLG. 

In addition to this Snapdragon 870, 5G can support LPDDR5 ram in quad-channel configuration clocked at 2750Mhz (transfer rate up to 44Gbps) or LPDDR4X ram in quad-channel configuration clocked at 2133Mhz (transfer rate up to 33.4Gbps).

 With the launch of Snapdragon 870, 5G Qualcomm also stated that this chipset will be debuting in commercial devices soon enough, more likely to be in March'21. Smartphone manufacturers like Oneplus, Oppo, Xiaomi, Motorola, and IQOO are some of the brands which are going to use the snapdragon 870 5G SoC in their upcoming smartphones.
